Microsoft commissioned Value Prism Consulting to conduct a comparison of the licensing costs of the three leading enterprise relational database management system: Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle 10g, and IBM DB2.

This paper presents a summary of the difference in base licensing costs in addition to the costs of optional add-on products, and shows that of the three, Microsoft SQL Server 2005 offers the highest level of functionality in the base product and offers it at the lowest cost, based on per-processor license fees.
